Why Choose Caldwell Sports Medicine for PRP?

Not all PRP treatments are the same.

The quality of a PRP injection depends on several factors, including:

  • the processing system used,

  • the concentration of platelets achieved,

  • the volume of PRP produced,

  • accurate placement of the injection, and

  • selecting the right patients.

At Caldwell Sports Medicine, we use an advanced double-spin PRP protocol designed to produce a higher concentration of platelets than many single-spin systems. Our process also yields a larger volume of PRP, allowing treatment to be tailored to the specific condition being treated.

Just as importantly, Dr. Caldwell is an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon who understands the underlying mechanics of knee injuries. If PRP is unlikely to provide meaningful benefit, he will tell you and discuss other treatment options.

Are You a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate if you:

✔ Have knee pain lasting several months

✔ Want to avoid or delay surgery if appropriate

✔ Have mild or moderate arthritis

✔ Have failed physical therapy or anti-inflammatory medications

✔ Want to remain active

PRP is not appropriate for every patient. Severe bone-on-bone arthritis, major mechanical instability, or certain large meniscus tears may require different treatment.

What Happens During the Procedure?

  1. Evaluation and examination.

  2. Blood is drawn from your arm.

  3. The sample is processed using our double-spin system.

  4. The PRP is injected into the appropriate area of your knee.

  5. You return home the same day.

  6. Most appointments take about an hour.

Recovery

Patients often experience soreness for several days after treatment. Within a week, many patients report improvement - although recovery timelines vary depending on the condition being treated.

Why Patients Trust Dr. Caldwell

Instead of promoting PRP as a cure-all, Dr. Caldwell takes a thoughtful, evidence-informed approach. As a double fellowship-trained and double board certified orthopedic sports medicine surgeon, he evaluates whether PRP is the right choice for your specific condition—and recommends PRP only when it offers the best chance of success.

That balanced approach is one reason patients throughout Fort Lauderdale and South Florida seek his expertise.

Does PRP work for knee arthritis?

Research suggests PRP can reduce pain and improve function for many patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. It is generally less effective for advanced, bone-on-bone arthritis. Individual results vary, and Dr. Caldwell will help determine whether you're a good candidate.(https://arthroscopyjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1016/j.arthro.2024.03.046)

How many PRP injections will I need?

Most of our patients improve after a single injection, while others may benefit from a series depending on the diagnosis, severity of symptoms, and treatment goals.  Dr. Caldwell prefers to start with one injection and then determine whether better results can be achieved with repeat injections.  Furthermore, our PRP contains a higher platelet concentration and a higher total volume than others and thus many patients only need one injection.

Is PRP covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, currently consider PRP investigational for many orthopedic conditions and do not cover the procedure. Our team will review costs with you before treatment.

Does the injection hurt?

Most patients describe the injection as uncomfortable but tolerable. We have a two stage numbing process (some offices omit this )- one is topical and the other is a soft tissue injection. It is a relatively quick and easy procedure.

Can PRP help me avoid surgery?

For the right patient, PRP may reduce pain and improve function enough to delay or avoid surgery. However, it cannot reverse advanced arthritis or repair every type of structural injury. An orthopedic evaluation is essential to determine the most appropriate treatment.
